When writing a blog, what's your Tag theory? Some people use tags similar to a categorizing system, others use them more as subject specific.

Me, personally, I lean more towards subject specific. If I have a blog about a piece of code, I'll generally tag it with what I'm writing in and what dev app I'm running. If I drop a name in my blog, I'll generally tag their name.

Also, for the SEO guys out there, exactly how important are tags to search engines, if any? I know Technorati uses them to an extent.

now are you putting meta tags in the code for each blog post or just the main site?

I do the same. Categorizing is a vague word for me.

with my new design I have completely switched to using tags. All of my posts were thrown into a single category and I use the tags and tag cloud built into WP 2.3 to sort everything out.

I love it. More importantly however, Technorati loves it.

I believe that categories are much broader than tags. If you wrote a post about your soccer game, for example, you could put it in the Sports category and give it the tags soccer, fun, and Saturday.

Sandman has it right. Categorized, then tag, so the search engines can have some fun. I`ve added tags to my blog recently, haven`t seen any change becuse I haven`t churned out anything interesting yet, but I do believe it will help users find some of my articles.

As for my tagging practices, I just write down every possible word related to the article. On average, I would say that gives me 10 tags or so.

If you're using Adsense on you site the <H#>, <strong> or <b>, and meta tags play a big role in which ads are shown. As long as you don't get nuts about it you can use this to increase your payouts for these ads.

Hmm... Sandman and Max, you are making me rethink. You both made sense. Well somehow that is. Anyway, you guys are confusing me. What tags are you talking about bgmacaw?

I've been blogging for more than a two years now and I heard anyone can make money out of it. I'm really willing to learn new stuffs but I just don't know where to start! Good thing this new forum has been created.

Back to tags. I'm currently using Multiply for my blogs but it doesn't have that categorizing thing. Only tags. I used to write blogs at my Friendster account but I moved to Multiply. Friendster had that categorizing thing. But honestly, I have no idea how to customize it.

Ged, these tags are frustrating me. sad.gif

If you're planning to blog seriously, why not get the best you can?

IMHO, WordPress.com is really good. And WordPress.org is also good, if you're willing to manually host it (although it gives you more freedom.)

@bgmacaw: We don't mean HTML tags, we mean tags related to blogging.

If I blogged more often I would probably have a more defined way of tagging my threads, but at this point in time (for the few weeks that I have actually blogged before giving it up) I simply used what they topic was, if there were any names of people, places, or websites in the thread I wrote I added them in as well.
