Grayscale->Binary conversion

There are a ton of different image file formats, and many can store greyscale or colour. And "binary" is just the series of 1s and 0s; really when you get right down to it, that's how all files are stored. Do you mean monochrome rather than binary? And what file format are you dealing with?
