Once again, our PR has dropped. We fell from PR3 to PR2. As well, our best links have fallen off the face of Google. When I shared this recent happening with a friend, he shared with me that Google has penalties for 2 urls that share duplicate content. Has anyone else experienced this? If this is true, it's because we have multiple URLs pointing to the same index.html page. Again, if this is true, is mod_rewrite the best way to handle fixing this? I was thinking of simply blocking the spiders with robots.txt, however he suggested mod_rewrite would be the better way to go.

Thoughts?

That is true, but it is possible there is more involved than that. Link partnerships with Link Farm companies can hurt your rankings also.

Some things to check, and maybe some of your links just lost value and it cascaded down to you.

But, check that all your page titles are different, that none of your pages share the same description, make sure that if you do have a script that generates multiple pages with the same content (i.e. like a forum) that you robots.txt out the duplicate pages.

Here at DIC I have 495,000 pages in the index right this second, and over 1.5 million blocked by robots.txt.

My Bbogs's PR went up with the recent Google rounds, sittin' at a PR 4 now, not bad for being slammed to a 0 less then a year ago.

Why were you slammed to a 0? Usually blogs fair pretty well given the dynamic content.

** Update ** Once I did some patching with the robots.txt & copying the index.html & pointing the virtual server to the new html (that is now asking spiders to ignore) it seams to have done the trick. Our site is coming up on Google, although not as high as before, but still up there.

So that's a relief!

I had paid links on my site, essentially every blog affiliated with PayPerPost or ReviewMe was slammed. I just made the corrections and filed a reinclusion request.
