So, in your opinion which is the best free 3D software?

Things that I care about:

- Simplicity (the more simple it is, the fastest I can model thus the more useful it is to me)
- Rendering (I don't want to have to use an external renderer)
- Free (I'm not paying for 3DS Max or Maya)

Things I don't care about:

- Animation effects
- Extra features and scripting support

Currently I use Blender and Google's SketchUp. SketchUp is only good for simple concepts (although it's dead easy to use) and Blender's user interface is still a bit confusing for me (but it can make some nice models).

Others I know of:

Anim8or
Art of Illusion
CB Model Pro
Moonlight 3D
TrueSpace
Wings 3D

So just say what you think is best, either out of any listed on this post or others that you know of.

And like I said above it has to be free - none of the commercial 3DS Max, Maya, Lightwave etc...

Personally I like Blender. It is a little hard to get used to mostly because many of the tutorials were written for older versions of the program and they no longer apply in the same way (changes in the UI). But it is nice and prowerful as well as pretty simple to use and well documented.

So, I would say blender.

Blender. I haven't figured out the interface, but my friends who did figure it out, said it was really powerful and was workable with, once figured out.

Personally I like 3DS Max, but that's not free, so yep, vote goes to Blender.

I'm not against pirating commercial software to try it out, but if you're going to actually use it then buy it.

Blender is nice, and it gets better with each new version. It's got a bit of a learning curve but you'll be hard pressed to find a program that does as much as Blender does that doesn't have one.

Also, Blender is free, runs on nearly every operating system, and has a lot of plugins to handle other formats.

There are a lot of Blender video tutorials on Youtube. icon_up.gif
