Google announced today that they will be releasing "Chrome", their very own open-source web browser to the world tomorrow (Sept 2) sometime during the day.

You'll be able to get the browser here: http://www.google.com/chrome

They also released a comic that hints at some of the features: http://books.google.com/books?id=8UsqHohww...tcover#PPA10,M1

So here are some of the key features:

- Multi-process browsing. Each tab has it's own process and memory management.
- JavaScript Virtual Machine - Better garbage collection, faster rendering, more stable!!!!
- Each version tested on millions of web pages using google's existing crawling technology
- Incognito Window - A mode that makes that window log NOTHING on your computer. Sweet (porn mode in IE8?!)
- Tabs that can drag between windows and maintain state.
- The "Chrome" name draws from the idea of web apps running as apps, without all the junk in the browser
- Gears. Gears. Gears. Developers. Developers. Developers.

Alright, that's what I gathered from the comic. Check it out and share your insights and observations. And get ready to download what may be the "FireFox Killer"... Chrome!

Looks brilliant!

Firefox, IMHO, is currently the best available option. However, it's not without issues. Being a memory hog and letting rouge javascripts eat it is certainly an issue. None of the others are really any better in this respect. If a browser wasn't prone to this, that would be worth serious consideration.

As a designer I am annoyed that I will have to keep up to date on yet another major browser. But I am eager to see what google has come up with. smile.gif I'm surprised I didn't hear about this before now...

EDIT: My thread was merged, just rewording a bit.

Google just renewed their partnership with Mozilla/FireFox through 2011 last week... anyone know how "Chrome" and "FireFox" will get along!? Will they become one and the same?!

Looks like Windows first, which makes sense. Pity. I await the Linux version.

Looks like you beat me to it~ I was just about to post about it.

It's not available yet, but it's released today.

I'll download it tonight and write a review about it (though someone will probably beat me to that, too) smile.gif

AHHHHH now I am all hyped to get my hands on it just to play. I love my firefox but this is like, oh well it is google we have to see if we trash it or praise it. Although something just brought up in a thing I read is privacy mode really private or will it draw more attention to you?????? What if someone decides to watch you in privacy mode if that is possible.

Chrome is part of the internal resource system Firefox already uses, so it looks like there is more than just a little teamwork going on between firefox and google . I think it'd be great of they could just team up and together bring firefox up to a new level instead of doing something that competes and splits the user base. If firefox could do the multiple process system and save states for tabs/windows that would be amazing. There is a recent/upcoming update for javascript in FF that is supposed to increase run speed dramatically .

EDIT: Google is having some sort of press conference. It starts in about an hour: http://opensourcepbx.tmcnet.com/news/2008/09/02/3628396.htm
