Hey Guys,

I'm totally new to an x64 OS. I'm running vista 64 and my normal shell that i use is minsys with mingw, but since i have an x64 OS It's really hard for me to find a way to install it properly. Now I was hoping you guys could point me in the direction to be able to install a shell and compiler to use on this OS. I code mainly in c++ and java... learning php, xml and mysql. Also would it be possible for me to install ubuntu or red hat on this x64 processor, like is it backwards compatable with an x86 version of linux?

Most appreciated,
Jay

Yes, you can install either the i386 or the amd64 version of any linux distribution, and it'll work just fine. (I have the same processor as you, and I have Gentoo Linux installed... as an x86 system. So no 64-bit installed for me yet. wink2.gif )

As to a C++ compiler... I think at the moment you're stuck with Microsoft Visual Studio as far as Windows goes. On Linux, GCC does amd64 compiling.

You might want to try this (I haven't tried it yet):
http://sourceforge.net/projects/mingw-w64/

I would imagine that you can still use 32-bit MSYS, and use the 64-bit compiler to produce 64-bit executables. It is also technically possible to use a MinGW compiler from a Cygwin shell. There are some potential issues here, but for basic usage, there isn't usually a problem.

My computer is windows so I went with the microsoft VC compiler. The 64bit version does not come with visual studio but it does come with the x64 platform API and so when you install that it will add the 64 bit libraries and compiler. Then setup my IDE's to point to the 64bit compiler.
