My daughter is starting to study Computer Science soon. I got her a pretty little laptop. Now, they are going to start on C right away - she has no experience whatsoever yet (can't think why she wants to study this at all).

I downloaded the GNU gcc but it is an extreme pain to install it on a PC, and this little sweetie has Vista just to make it interesting.

So someone advise me please which compiler to download for her. Maybe I should put Linux on the PC at home and get an ordinary compiler, but these days it is all Windows so she ought to get used to it.

I thought of trying Linux on the laptop, but maybe I should leave it to the college to teach her all that and let her do it herself. The man in the laptop shop would have put XP on it, but I would have had to buy a licence, and my credit card was still screaming from the laptop.

If this is in the wrong section, please someone push it into the right place...

You are on your own as far as Vista goes, but you can find a nice list of free Compilers & IDE's here.

If she is just getting into CS, I would say hold off on the Linux. It might be a bit much trying to learn how to work on a PC, while trying to focus on College.

go on google, and search this "dev cpp". That is a good compiler in my opinion, and it works on vista too. And it has support for "c and c++".

Dev-C++ is really sort of an orphaned project. I think at this point I'd be suggesting the free MS Express Edition(s) or Code::Blocks.

Go for Code::Blocks with the MinGW compiler.

Code Blocks is really good

If she is going into cs then they will tell her which compiler they want. For example I was a computer engineering major and when i took a programming class with the engineering departement we used visual studio"Provided by the school for free download" When I took a programming class with the cs department we used what ever compiler we wanted but all examples were done useing vi and gcc.

I can second this recommendation. All the goodness of GCC with a very nice IDE wrapped around it.
