The best book that I have found is called 'Starting Out With Visual Basic (2005). Written by Tony Gaddis and Kip Irvine, published by Addison Wesley.
I believe they have a newer version of this book for 2008. If you read and follow all the projects, you should become very advanced in this language and this book is also one of the best references available for many Hi-End programmers. This book also includes many options available on the web to solve and/or answer any questions you have or problems that you find in the future. The cost for the book new is close to $100.00 but if you look around at used book stores or on the web, I'm sure you can find one at a far lower cost. Just make sure that you get or try to get the CD that comes with it, otherwise you can get the files via download from the publisher.
I also have my first book on this language which was called 'Basic', which was the 1st version of the language. (circa 1981). I use this book as needed for general items because the basic language is still the same as it was back then except it has been updated to include modern computer tech and apps. I never realized how similar the languages are until I took a class in Visual Basic 2005.
