Hi Im wondering if someone could point me in the right direction I have read about a program that NASA uses now that allows them to use part of your cpu bandwidth to help run their computers and im interested in this. So knowing that it is possible i was wondering 1) If their is a program to allow you to use you own computers in the same way over a network connection and 2) if not can someone please point me in the right direction on how to develop a program to do such a thing thank you all for your time i appriciate any information you can give me.

noone knows about the program called Condor from nasa?
go to www.nasa.gov and in the search type Condor

This is called distributed computing.

Basically a client does jobs from a server with spare CPU time. It's really not that complex. The hardest part is getting a lot of people to run your client.

Ty tom i appriciate the feedback now i have somewhere to start my research I was actually just gonna do it within a local network though I got about 8 extra computers to set up I just kinda wanted to do some messing around with it not set it up over a nationwide network so thanx again for pointing me in the direction I need to get information

There was a space project that had quite a popular distributed system called seti, you just installed a screensaver and it worked whilst you weren't at your desk

Also check out sever clusters. They do the same thing. In fact, this site talks about a cluster set up with mini-itx boards running FreeBSD 4.8, and MPICH 1.2.5.2.
