Popular Software For The Linux Community, What are some of the recommended programs?

As most of you know I am now a full fledged Linux user at Home. I have been experimenting with it off and on for about a year now I am also seeing a lot more Linux users popping up in these forums and I am sure it has been done before but I haven't found it yet.

It is nice to know that I can open up my terminal and do a
CODE
sudo apt-get install something...

and before you know it I have some new programs to play with.

My question for discussion is what are some of the essential programs/software recommended by some of the more advanced Linux-users. (media players, IRC Clients, Email, IDE's, Graphical Editors, etc.,)

A lot of programs I use a lot so far are:
Code::Blocks
NetBeans
ScITE
xChat
Pidgin
Evolution
OpenOffice Suite

I am personally interested in good media players for both Audio and Video. DVD burning and playback - I think some of the programs I was using in Windows are available for Linux as well. (dvd Shrink, DVDFab)

I am not using Linux yet since AutoCAD will not run on Linux. However, my friend told me that everything will run if you have WINE, this is also an open source.

For now almost everything in windows will run in Linux according to him, AutoCAD, Windows Media Player, Microsoft Office.

Media Player VLC or mplayer
Email Thunderbirl if you use pop3
Irc irssi
& for DVD burning I use good 'ol growisofs

Currently I have Evolution - But I think I like Thunderbird better as I used it before.

@no2 - yes now I can get back to coding smile.gif No more Vista distractions for me. Although I still can't seem to get Gtk working with Code::Blocks

I have heard people use the word aircrack as a useful piece of software but have no idea what they mean...also, I like yakuake...really nice terminal!

@abgorn - all of the above the whole purpose of the thread is not for my enlightenment, but for all the people who are looking to use Linux Distros and would like to know of some of the recommended/preferred/commonly used programs. Consider this an information gathering thread! wink2.gif

Edit- I probably could have even gotten more specific claiming what are some of the preferred KDE & Gnome programs out there. Like I said in my post I was only concerned on some of the more popular media players as I have many tools that I commonly use. But I noticed an influx in Linux questions lately and thought it might be good to offer a thread with some insight to different programs available.

2nd edit - @Homemade Jam - didn't see this post till after I finished this. Aircrack is a suite of tools designed to perform packet capture, packet injection, WEP/WPA cracking.

Either your friend is putting one over on you, or he doesn't know what he's talking about.

Wine is far from perfect. There are lots of apps that run great under Wine, but there are also many that either don't run correctly (some features don't work, aren't stable, or require work-arounds) or just plain don't work at all. It all depends on which particular version of the application you're working with. For example, AutoCAD support is all over the board.

Vector Graphics - Inkscape
Inkscape is a widly used vector graphics tool that's eopn source and is often compared to Adobe Illustrator.

Google Earth - Oh yes, it's on Linux.

C++ IDE - Qt (open-source version available)

WYSIWYG Editor - Kompozer

Drawing Program - Dia

Thanks for the info. I forgot to say that it was AutoCAD R14. If I use Linux in the future that is for coding and internet use only. I stick with windows for 3D graphics and rendering.

@abgorn - thanks - that's the kind of stuff I was hoping to see in this post. A list to compile for people to reference. Here are a few more I found useful.

Celtx - Integrated Media Pre-Production great for Storyboarding, novelists, etc..

Equinox-3D - Havent used personally but heard good things about.
