i'm just curious as to what they use to create really in-depth animations? You know like all the sqauresoft movies and things.

Most likely Maya or 3D studio max, these programs have excellent animation tools such as IK handles, bones, joints all for skeletal animation, they will also have dedicated animators that only do animation.

South park now uses Maya even though its 2D, well now its fake 2d hehe.

the 3d movie and animation industry is way ahead in the terms of graphics compared to games, did you know that it took 38 hours to Render one frame with all the Transformers(on screen at once) in the movie, consider the average movie framerate of 24fps, 38 x 24 = 912 :s

now thats crazy

I think there would have been a good year of rendering for the transformers movie. For advent children they mostly used motion capture for the characters unless something wasnt possible to recreate, then it would have to be animated by animators.

The people who made advent children had never before made a movie and pretty much just did what they had been doing in all the cut scenes for there games.

The render times in advent children would not have been as intense as transformers due to the unrealistic(not entirely) look of the characters and backgrounds could be recycled and used as stills

That final fantasy movie took forever to render as well. But we have to take into consideration that there is no interaction with said movie. Unlike a video game, player actions must be taken into account, which is why games aren't "there yet" graphically compared to those films.

Blender does some cool CG but I have no clue how to really use it, but I know basic modeling.

I know what you mean, I have been googling for good tutorials for months now and not been able to find many, it is just something that people don't use, I guess people go pro or don't worry about it...

If you can ever figure out how to use it Blender has some interesting game creation and animation features built in.

Yeah blender is possibly the most un-user friendly program I have ever seen, its cool that it can have python implementation for game creation but the learning curve on that program is just silly.

The best thing about it is that its free and has a large community of users to help you, but tbh once youve used the new maya 2008 you will never look back, the personal learning edition is free as well which is a bonus.

now Maya and 3DS max are owned by the same company it wont be long before there's a MAYA studio Max or something to that effect that is just crazily good smile.gif

I dont think Blender is that bad, Blender is very easy to use. Its scarry at first, because it doesnt look like a traditional windows application, but as long as you dont give into the intimidation and actually read through a basic start tutorial (for example the: noob to pro.pdf that every starts with) you will find is actually very logical. A few friends of mine also got into blender and found the same thing.

One friend even purchased an education copy of 3d studio max (he gets it cheeper cuz hes a teacher) and ended up going to Blender before his reg expired, because the things he wanted to do were easyer in blender (stuff like hair)

I think the worst part of blender and it can be worked around, is the skeleton rigging can be a bit puppet like, and its a challenge to make them move smoothly

I love animating using skeletons, it sure beat the old vertex animation I used to do. It's much easier if I have this huge detail person/robot/thing that's been reduced to joints. I'm pretty good when it comes to skeletons actually, but modeling and texture mapping the skin picture give me problems.
