Hey guys,

I am looking to read a good book (computer/programming) related. Not like C# for dummies but more of a story type. I dont know if these exist but just looking for some good reading. Any recommendations?

THanks,
reCoded.

first, wrong forum duder, you were probably looking for general programming, someone will move it for you.

second, you gotta be a little more specific, do you mean something like the tales of a team developing something? there is a book out there called "dreaming in code" http://www.amazon.com/Dreaming-Code-Progra...e/dp/1400082463 about such a thing. the asshole author claims he didn't so much as do a google search for similar names and had no idea about this site though, so while it may be a good book, he's still a dick (with a k) head.

Well not really, I am looking for a great book to read. Not like coding or anything like that. I looked into the author Kevin D. Mitnick...Anyone ever read his books? Such as Art of Intrusion or Art of deception?

as opposed to a great book you don't read? i think you need to be more specific about the exact type of book you are looking for.

Have read art of intrusion...pretty good read if you ask me - not quite as technical as I would like but still interesting and raises some good points.

I am also reading "The Music of the Primes" at the moment which is a math book on primes and the difficulty in finding them.

I would also recommend "The Future of The Internet & How to Stop it" by J Zittrain - it also discusses some interesting points that arise from the anarchy and chaos of the internet - how order arises from nothing. Although this book is a little for lay people which annoyed me quite a bit.

Funny you mentioned "The Art of Intrusion" I JUST PICKED IT UP! I read the first chapter about the guys hitting the casino. Seems like a great book so far and enjoying it, but hey its only the first chapter...I was looking to get "Hackers: Heroes of Computer Revolutions" but they didn't have it. Ill order it. Thanks guys!

If you're looking for something along the lines of fiction, you should check out The Blue Nowhere by Jefferey Deaver. They take a lot of liberties with technology, but all in all I really liked that book.

Another good one is The Cuckoo's Egg. It was written by Clifford Stoll and is about his experience chasing down a hacker who broke into one of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory's computers.

I will definitely pick those books up...The Cuckoo's Egg is one I might be interested in. I can't wait for Kevin Mitnick to write about himself and his hacking story.

Really enjoying The Art of Intrusion!

Oh by the way if you want to send me The Cuckoo's Egg that would be awsome. Help a poor college student out!

Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson (same guy as Snow Crash)

There are several heroes, but one is a brill hacker and one, his Grandad, invents computing. Plenty of action and a very satisfying ending. Cryptography, Nazi gold, eveything...
