So while I was idly slash dotting I came across this little article

Slashdot: Quantas Blames Wireless for Crashes

You would have thought that they would test consumer equipment on planes before allowing it on.

Is it possible for the clicking of a mouse to indeed cause problems with a plane's navigation system?

I'm not sure if you guys have Mythbusters over in the UK, but they tested this on that show. Turns out that no consumer devices are powerful enough to penetrate the RF shielding required by law on avionic equipment. I think quantas is FOS on this one...

Yup, the Planes equipment is successfully shielded against a LOT more then the usual shielding. It's designed with safety in mind, and it's kept a lot more secure then regular equipment.

Besides, WiFi isn't a very strong signal, it spreads out everywhere. If anything would penetrate it, you'd need plenty more then the voltage and current a small battery could give out, and you'd need more of a focused beam rather then a general signal.

If anyones interested, found an update on this topic Slashdot

Apparently it was computer error rather than the so-called interference from computers that they initially blamed it on.

It was most likely human error, & the human lied.

I don't think it interferes with the navigational equipment as both use frequencies in totally different ranges.
I'm pretty sure it was something else.
