Hey Guys,

Was looking into learning a programming language and wanted your advice on what a good language is to learn preferably an easy one to start with....
I did a little VB whilst at college and enjoyed it but then I found a job as an Network Administrator... and started to concentrate on topics related to that but now I have decided I want to get back into programming and want the advice of you programming Guru's on a good language to learn =]

Cheers

I chose those two as they are fairly easy to pick up yet powerful languages for all sorts of purposes.
It depends really on what you see yourself doing.
Are you going to be a web programmer, games, apps? decide what you want to end up doing then you can have a clearer path to a good language for that field.

I started out doing J2ME games for phones now I write C# ASP.Net stuff to support the testing of games etc.

If you want to do web programming and have the cash to go the Microsoft route then learn C#. It's similar to Java, enough so you could pick that up after learning a good bit of C#.

Java is cheaper to learn in my experience. The courses seem to be cheaper and all the tools and IDE are free.

If you want to go a free route to web pages then PHP. Again it's similar to Java and C# but obviously more like scripting. It's powerful and free to install and there are plenty of free tutorials (there are for Java and C# too if you are looking for free tuition and don't want/need certificates).

If you operate mainly in the Windows world and want something you can use for apps and web pages that is also something there are lots of jobs on offer for then C# would probably be a good route.

Java is good but it's reliance on the JVM can put lay people off from using your software (anyone feel free to negate this if you have had a more positive experience with Java).

Be sure to learn the foundations of computer programming so that you can pick up any useful language and work with it within days like it feels natural to you. Martyr knows this well.
