My project is to string together strong authentication for my Windows remote access VPN. Despite our incredible shrinking IT budget I'm supposed to come up with a good idea without spending much cashola. I think the phone-based 2-factor idea would be most appropriate. Anyone have ideas about which ones work best?

You really need to give a little bit more information.

What is the remote connection going to be used for?

How much data are you expecting to be transferred?

etc. etc.

Phone-based solutions have come a long way, baby. Everybody has a wired or wireless phone. Phone calls are cheap. IT doesn't have to manage it. It accomplishes everything that a token can manages.

Yep this is right on, PhoneFactor is the phone-based solution I use. It's easy to set up, it's also easy to manage. Also it's free for an unlimited number of users on a single VPN application.

I think the use of Phones as the token is a great idea, there have been some bad executions of this idea. But PhoneFactor executes brilliantly.

Thanks guys, excellent responses. I've gone and checked out PhoneFactor (www.phonefactor.com/solutions/remote-access-vpns/ by the way) and it looks like what we need. I even set it up on a personal level for my LogMeIn account. I'll continue to fiddle but you've given me the right vein of ideas.

Good to hear, one more aspect of PhoneFactor is the immediate alert you get if someone has somehow got details, which then means you can respond accordingly. That is powerful.

I also use PhoneFactor for LogMeIn, personally I'm more concerned with people hacking my censored personal images biggrin.gif
