Developing a portfolio, as a piece of software?

So I've done this for 2 reasons:
1) It's helped me learn wxWidgets really fast~ It's a small project, but one which requires a bunch of different controls.
2) It's a different way to express a portfolio~ Not sure if it's better or worse than linking to a website, but in my opinion, what better way to show that you can program by turning your portfolio into a program?

It's pretty much finished, for the most part. There are a few tabs to add, but this is enough to give the basic idea.

I might upload it when it's done, I've gotta think about it~ sensitive information and such.
But then again I like to get feedback on stuff that I do.

Let me know what you think, whether you think it's a crappy idea and I shouldn't use it (this is more to learn wxWidgets than anything else)

Here's a screenshot, scaled down:

Basically, I've created a custom control called a ProcessLabel, which can launch an external application~ I've used it so that the viewer can actually launch the applications. I've also provided links to the SourceForge, an overview, and a screenshot of the software.

Other tabs are basically just "about me," "contact me," "CV," etc~

I would be careful with this(and call it worse than building a website), because it's not really the most flexible way to present your work. What happens if your prospective employer is using a Mac? Linux? Are you going to have cross-platform compatibility in place for your portfolio? And if you aren't, are you sure that that won't reflect negatively on you in the eyes of the person you are giving it to?

It looks like a neat way to display information - but I would recommend against using it as a real portfolio.

There is also the issue of having people you don't know send you executables. Maybe have a link to download this on your web portfolio, but I wouldn't be emailing this around in place of a CV, or to replace a web portfolio.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking of (linking it on a site)

As for the "Mac/Linux/etc" issue, it's in C++ with wxWidgets~ a cross platform library. The only things that aren't cross platform are the applications which I've written in C#.NET, which I'll mention (if I haven't already) that they're Windows specific.

Thanks for the feedback. smile.gif

Like I said, it was more of a way to learn it than anything~ I'm a practical learner.
